Quartz, also known as silica, is a common mineral. Hence, it is often used in many buidling materials. Particularly in concrete, limestone and certain types of natural stone.

Dust is emitted in the production of these materials. Part of this dust might be respirable (respirable quartz or silica). Respirable quartz or silica is carcinogenic: prolonged exposure can lead to the development of lung cancer.
